A new kind of privatisation.

Moving into the private sector prooves a hit for trainers.
Aware Plus was formed
only a year ago but already it's breaking new ground in training. Up
until recently, much of the best management skills training around
was only available to the public sector but in a new initiative
called Breakthrough!,
Aware plus is making this kind of training available to private
sector organisations too who want to bring on their staff and develop
their management potential.
Director of Aware Plus,
Dr Simon Raybould explains: “there's a long tradition of the
public sector providing an excellent environment for newly promoted
managers – obviously they don't get it right all the time, but our
experience is that by and large, public sector organisations really,
really try. We know, because we've been providing that training for
a long time now. It struck us recently that this kind of expertise
should be available to ambitious private sector professional
organisations too.... so that's what we're going to do!”
Aware's
package for the private sector is called Breakthrough!
because that's just what it helps you do. The training is delivered
as a set of modules which build together and support staff who are
new to management.
“There's
a point in anyone's career – from architects to zoologists – when
you're good at your job and you've pretty much mastered the technical
skills. The next stage is to master the additional skills you need
to breath through into management... hence the name Breakthrough!”
says Simon.
So
far, the Breakthrough! package has been taken up by accountants,
architects and designers in particular but “there's no reason
for these skills to be only taken up by people at the front of the
alphabet” adds Clare Andrews, another trainer on the programme.
“Clients have really loved what we do, saying both how much
they enjoyed it and how it was just what they needed”.
What's
more, with government funding, a large chunk of the costs doesn't
even need to come from your company's budget if you qualify.
